Timothy Bretl

Tim received his B.S. in Engineering and B.A. in Mathematics from Swarthmore College in 1999, and his M.S. in 2000 and Ph.D. in 2005 both in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University. Subsequently, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Computer Science, also at Stanford University. Since 2006, he has been with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he is an Associate Professor of Aerospace Engineering and a Research Associate Professor in the Coordinated Science Laboratory. He received the National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award in 2010.

Avishai Sintov

Avishai received his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beer-Sheva, Israel, in 2008, 2012, and 2016, respectively. He is currently a Postdoctoral research fellow in the Coordinated Science Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research interests include grasp planning algorithms, motion planning, dynamic manipulations, dynamic re-grasping, climbing robots, machine learning and mechanical design.

Andy Borum

Andy is a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow in the Aerospace Engineering Department. Prior to joining the Bretl Research Group, Andy graduated from Virginia Tech with degrees in Engineering Mechanics and Mathematics. His research is focused on theoretical and applied mechanics, geometric and optimal control theory, and robotic manipulation. In addition to his work with the Bretl Research Group, Andy is a member of the Education Justice Project, which provides educational opportunities to incarcerated students at Danville Correctional Center in Danville, Illinois.

Kyung Yun Choi

Yun received her B.S in Mechanical Engineering from Yonsei University in 2013, Seoul, South Korea. She is currently a Master student in the Aerospace Engineering department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining the Bretl research group, Yun has worked on developing CubeSats as chief engineer of structural and thermal control system. Her current research interest includes Soft Robotics, HCI, Biomimetics. She has also received the Korean Government Scholarship for Study Overseas in 2014. Yun enjoys drawing and traveling.

Joseph DeGol

Joseph DeGol

Joseph DeGol

Joe received his B.S. in Computer Engineering and B.S. in Mathematics from the Pennsylvania State University in 2012. He is currently a Ph.D. student in the Computer Science department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he works with Dr. Derek Hoiem, Dr. Tim Bretl, and Dr. Mani Golparvar-Fard. His interests include using geometry alongside images or video for reasoning about objects and camera motion in a scene. This has lead to work in 3D Reconstruction, Visual Odometry and Camera Pose Estimation, and Geometry-Informed Recognition. He received the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship in 2014.

Dave Hanley

Jamie Norton

Jamie earned his B.S. in Psychology from the University of Florida. He is currently a Ph.D. student in the Neuroscience Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Jamie is interested in brain-computer interfaces, signal processing, cognitive neuroscience, and the affective sciences. He has also received a fellowship from the National Science Foundation’s Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship for Neuroengineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
